Testing food for Glyphosate in Canada

Glyphosate, as most of us already know, is the active ingredient in Monsanto’s RoundUp, VisionMax and various other third party brands of herbicides.

The herbicide package might contain other material that are also harmful, but our regulatory authorities approve only glyphosate for use in agriculture, and allow the corporations to package it with whatever else it likes.

The safety test data on glyphosate has never been independently verified. Furthermore, these safety test reports and data have never been made public in the US, Canada or anywhere else.

We have multiple ongoing issues with the Government of Canada, to get it to publicly release hitherto hidden safety documents based on which it is presumed to have approved the use of glyphosate in our agriculture. The Government does not quite say that the people do not have a right to see these documents, but nonetheless drags its feet indefinitely till we lose patience and go away. It has been dragging its feet for 30 years and counting.

We believe it to be illegal for the Government to release a product in the market and yet keep its safety records effectively hidden. Therefore, this use of glyphosate without disclosure of its safety data is perhaps legally contestable.

Meanwhile, glyphosate is being sprayed over our food, both GMO and non-GMO. It is also sprayed over our prairies, grasslands, forests and lawns. We are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction of species on planet earth. Wildlife biologists in Canada and USA are going hoarse trying to draw attention to the fact that many species are heading towards extinction due birth defects suspected linked to glyphosate in their environment. Nobody in the Government wants to listen.

When the Chief Medical officer of the Province of New Brunswick in Canada responded last year to these urgent calls and declared she would investigate the effect of Glyphosate on Canadian forests, she was promptly fired by the Government before she could start the investigation.

Meanwhile, World Heath Organization has classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen.

Some scientists have found strong correlation between increase in use of glyphosate and increase in a series of chronic auto-immune diseases.

Others have found evidence that RoundUp herbicide causes some test animals to develop tumours and die.

Yet other scientists are writing papers on how glyphosate is a mimic of glycine, a key amino acid as part of the 21 that form the basic building block of all life – thus being able to cross our blood-brain barrier, and be mis-incorporated into our proteins, causing these proteins to malfunction and trigger a cascading series of ill health and disease depending on where these defective proteins end up randomly or chaotically.

Most importantly, science now knows that glyphosate is a broad spectrum antibiotic and indiscriminately kills bacteria including our essential gut bacteria that help process our food and largely help our immune system. Glyphosate is also known as an endocrine disruptor.

Till recently, Canada did not even have a lab that would test glyphosate in food. Thankfully a small number of labs are now offering this service.
The government, we have unofficially learned, has started on the quiet testing local food for glyphosate. But for reasons best known to them, Government officials are not talking about it, nor is the Government disclosing the results of these tests to the public.

It is therefore the right time, we feel, to start a grassroots people’s movement, from the bottom up, to lean on our Governments, and to coax them to start testing food for glyphosate – for the people, and to make the results public. No ifs and buts.
This is not about endlessly debating if glyphosate is safe to be in our food. This is about people’s right to know how much of it is in which kinds of food and to deal with the information the way they see fit.

So far, the only block that appears to lean on our Government successfully is the corporate lobby. It is time the people entered the field and make the playing field even.

This petition is to not only to demand that different levels of our government start engaging in testing our food for the people, but also in learning how to start grassroots movements to take back control of our food web, food safety and food security.

Scientists in payroll of corporations and nonplussed politicians should not be the only people steering our food and agriculture policy. People should be the most important stake holder and a driver of policy decisions that relate to quality, security and safety of our food, which are the first steps towards healthcare and sovereignty.

For this reason, we are starting this new petition, directed at multiple levels of our government to test food for the people on one side, and to also use it for follow up brainstormings on how to promote and sustain a people’s grassroots movement to this effect.

Appreciate your participation and joining the effort.
Thank you
Tony Mitra

Rocco Galati files constitutional challenge against Canada-EU trade deal

Lawyer who successfully challenged Harper Supreme Court pick goes after CETA

By Lee Berthiaume, The Canadian Press Posted: Oct 24, 2016 5:20 PM ET Last Updated: Oct 24, 2016 5:20 PM ET

The Toronto lawyer who successfully challenged the previous Conservative government over one of its Supreme Court judge nominees is setting his sights on a new target: Canada’s free trade deal with the European Union.

Rocco Galati has filed a statement of claim in Federal Court arguing that the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, as the deal is known, is unconstitutional.

The complaint focuses on controversial provisions in the Canada-EU deal, similar to those contained in the North American Free Trade Agreement, that would let companies sue the government under certain circumstances.

The statement of claim also takes issue with the federal government’s tradition of signing and ratifying free trade deals and other international agreements without prior approval from Parliament or the provinces.

“Once it’s signed and ratified, we’re bound,” Galati said in an interview Monday.

“That’s the problem. But other trade partners like the U.S. and Europe, they don’t get bound this way. They have to put it through their parliaments and legislative houses before they can sign and ratify.”

Galati is developing a reputation for taking on Ottawa. The Supreme Court of Canada sided with him three years ago when he challenged the Harper government’s attempt to appoint Justice Marc Nadon to the top court.

The court challenge, filed Friday on behalf former Liberal cabinet minister Paul Hellyer and two other people, comes with the pact between Canada and the EU on life support thanks to a small region of Belgium standing firm in opposition to it.

Lawmakers in the region known as Wallonia have refused to approve the deal, which has been seven years in the making. Among their concerns is the investor-state dispute settlement mechanism, one of the subjects of Galati’s court challenge.

“It’s ironic that everybody is dumping on the Walloons,” Galati said. “They have a very similar constitution to ours except they’re respecting theirs. So I don’t know why they’re being criticized for respecting their constitution.”

Asked whether the agreement meets the requirements of Canada’s Constitution, International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland replied, “Absolutely.” Her office refused to comment further.

The statement of claim gives the federal government 30 days to respond.

‘Royal prerogative’

University of Ottawa constitutional law expert Errol Mendes said it’s been long established that the Constitution gives the federal government the power to sign and ratify treaties, just as it can deploy troops overseas without parliamentary approval.

“(Galati) may have won on Nadon, but I think he’s going to lose on this,” Mendes said. “It’s basic 101 constitutional law that the federal government has the right to sign and ratify international treaties under the royal prerogative.”

Galati isn’t the first to turn to the courts to stop the trade deal. Several groups in Germany raised concerns about parts of it coming into effect once it is signed, even though the country’s parliament wouldn’t have voted on it yet.

Germany’s constitutional court rejected the request for an emergency injunction two weeks ago, but did rule that the country must be allowed to leave unilaterally if the deal is found to be unconstitutional. The court also limited which parts of the deal could come into effect without the German parliament’s approval.

Another case on the deal’s constitutionality is still before the German courts.

All signs point to a corporate takeover of the marijuana industry by Bayer, Monsanto

All signs point to a corporate takeover of the marijuana industry by Bayer, Monsanto

marijuana-cannabis-weed
(NaturalNews) Following months of negotiations and various offers, Germany-based Bayer has finally sealed the deal with Monsanto, purchasing the seed giant for $66 billion. The merger is reported to be the largest all-cash deal on record.

The purchase means a lot of things, and none of them good for consumers. For one, it strengthens the monopolization of the world’s food supply. It also means more genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and chemicals to be doused on them.

Now, some are predicting the merge could also mean the takeover of the marijuana industry. Monsanto has an intimate business relationship with Scotts Miracle-Gro, “a convicted corporate criminal– and Scott’s Miracle-Gro is trying to take over the marijuana industry,” according to Big Buds Mag.

Is Monsanto going after the pot industry?

Scott’s Miracle-Gro has looked to capitalize on the expanding pot industry in states where the plant has been legalized or decriminalized. The company’s CEO, Jim Hagadorn, stated his intentions to spend up to $500 million to completely buy out the marijuana industry.

A Scott’s Miracle-Gro front group has already purchased General Hydroponics, Botanicare and Gavita.

“Major hydroponics nutrients, lighting, soil, and other grow equipment manufacturers report they’ve also been offered takeover bids by Scotts Miracle-Gro or its ‘Hawthorne’ front company.

“Maximum Yield Magazine, which bans marijuana hydroponics nutrients company Advanced Nutrients from its indoor gardening expo events, welcomed a Monsanto affiliate into its Boston gardening expo several years ago.”

Bayer is of course playing a role in this planned monopolization, as well. The German chemical company does business with GW Pharmaceuticals, a company based in the United Kingdom that grows cannabis and produces medicines from its compounds.

Monsanto and Bayer share information on how to genetically engineer cannabis

Bayer sells some of GW Pharmaceuticals’ products, including Sativex, a costly medical cannabis spray that’s reported to work less effectively than naturally grown pot.

Both Monsanto and Bayer have a history of producing chemical weapons used in war and toxic products, including PCBs, DDT, Agent Orange, Roundup and GMOs.

Members of the cannabis industry have seen the writing on the wall in terms of the world’s seed monopolies’ interest in marijuana.

“Michael Straumietis, founder and owner of hydroponics nutrients company Advanced Nutrients, has constantly warned the marijuana community about Monsanto, Scotts Miracle-Gro, GMO marijuana, and corporate takeover of the marijuana industry.”

The two corporations, which have now merged into one, have agreed to share trade secrets about plans to produce genetically modified marijuana.

Monsanto investor George Soros attempts to legalize pot in Uruguay

“Bayer is partnered with GW Pharmaceuticals, which grows its own proprietary marijuana genetics. You can bet Monsanto and Bayer are interested in creating GMO marijuana,” said Straumietis.

Billionaire investor, George Soros, previously waged a campaign to legalize pot in Uruguay so that he could invest in the plant. Soros owns 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock.

“Straumietis says South American governmental insiders report that Monsanto is working there on genetically-modified cannabis, along with pharmaceuticalizing THC, other cannabinoids, and terpenoids.”

The hydroponics nutrients owner warns that if biotech giants get involved in the cannabis industry, they’ll monopolize it the same way they have the seed, medicine and agricultural chemical industries.

“These corporations have reduced the variety and availability of native seeds. They genetically modify crops so farmers have to buy new seeds every year, and use corporate chemicals like RoundUp to grow them. They’d do the same thing with GMO marijuana,” said Straumietis.

Penticton New OCP and Bylaws Need More Input

Dear Editors:
New OCP and Bylaws Need More Input
The Mayor and Council and select staff and committees have been in the process of making a new Official Community Plan and Bylaws for Penticton. I  welcome all of the COP to reply to this Letter.
As the OCP and Bylaws affect all of us,these should be made with consideration for and in the best interest of all the people, and thereby should reflect the wishes of the majority of the electorate.
How can that occur when the Mayor/ Council and Staff disregard and avoid thousands of people and their expressed wishes? For example, the thousands who signed Petitions and hundreds who have written Letters to the COP and Newspapers, have made personal phone calls, and attempted communication at Council meetings!?
Are all these many people simply ignorant and to be ignored – residents and visitors to Penticton, men, women of all ages, from all walks and work in life, races and creeds!?
Mayor Jakubeit, Council and Staff, I hope, will make a turn-about,and acknowledge these people and their input in the creation of the OCP and Bylaws, and then truly make them in the best interest of this community!
