IT hasn’t been a good start to 2018 for China’s biggest smartphone manufacturers as they battle against fears their technology could be used in the ever-present threat of state espionage.
Huawei has become the world’s third largest smart phone manufacturer in recent years but the company faces headwinds in its expansion plans due to its close links with the Chinese communist party.
The Asian tech giant — which was founded by former People’s Liberation Army engineer Ren Zhengfei — and fellow Chinese smartphone maker ZTE have been singled out in a new US bill which aims to ban US government agencies from using phones and equipment from the Chinese tech companies.
The legislation was proposed last week by Texas lawmaker Mike Conaway because using such devices “would be inviting Chinese surveillance into all aspects of our lives,” he said.
The bill came just days after major US mobile carrier AT&T dramatically walked away from a deal to sell Huawei’s new flagship Mate10 device (recently reviewed by news.com.au) in its stores after congress reportedly raised national security concerns with regulators.
While any suggestion Huawei engages in any espionage activities on behalf of Beijing are “factually tenuous and unproven,” said Nigel Phair, “the reality is in the modern day of cyber security and espionage you can never be too careful.”
Mr Phair is the director of the Canberra-based Centre for internet Safety and said governments need to approach such issues from “a risk management perspective.”
“I don’t think you can be too cautious,” he said.
However while the US is proving to be exceedingly careful, some believe the growing influence China wields in Australia could prevent similar decisions from being made at home.
“Any electronic product containing software manufactured overseas potentially has security issues for the purchaser,” ANU Professor and defence intelligence and security expert Clive Williams said.
“We trust the Five-Eyes partners not to exploit that trust when we buy their equipment although clearly the US often has covert trapdoors into US products.”
The Australian Signals Directorate is responsible for overseeing the security of the government’s communications but Prof Wilson warns that China’s growing influence among our politicians could mean it is unlikely Australia takes the level of precautions recently seen in the US.
“There is sometimes powerful lobbying through former federal politicians, whose influence has been bought by China, to buy Chinese products,” he said in an e-mail to news.com.au. “In other words, they are putting their financial interests in front of Australia’s national security interests.”
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that US policymakers are urging carriers to cut commercial ties with the Chinese tech giants altogether — including any involvement in 5G development. According to the report, lawmakers warned that firms who have any ties to either Huawei or China Mobile could hamper their ability to do business with government agencies.

NO WAY, HUAWEI
These are by no means new fears. Former CIA head Michael Hayden said in 2013 that Huawei represented an “unambiguous” threat to the US and Australia.
Although there has been no evidence, and steadfast denials from Huawei, that the Chinese tech company eavesdrops on behalf of Beijing, for a number of years the US has prohibited Huawei from bidding for government contracts out of fears for national security.
Such moves are not uncommon when it comes to telecommunications infrastructure and certain software services.
Australia has also exercised such caution when it comes to allowing investment projects. Both Labor and Liberal government blocked Huawei from tendering for the National Broadband Network in 2012 and 2013. And last year the government raised concerns over Huawei’s involvement in building internet cables in the Pacific region.
In June, Huawei phones were approved for use by Defence officials and top diplomats — in a move that raised eyebrows among officials and politicians.
In September, similar concerns were again raised over the fact the Telstra Tough T55 handset which is made by ZTE was available on the secure ParlICT website to order. The phone was listed for $195 on the ordering system available to all who work in Parliament House.
But most interestingly, the latest concerns expressed by US politicians extend to the consumer market as they stepped in to sour the deal between AT&T and Huawei.
According to The New York Times, AT&T walked away from a deal to sell the Mate10 smartphone to US customers after politicians wrote a letter to regulators saying congress had “long been concerned about Chinese espionage in general, and Huawei’s role in that espionage in particular.”

Local activist Kevin Proteau led a delegation to city council Tuesday asking for the city to hold a public forum on the effects of the technology on health. “We really need to be concerned about this if we are going to be moving forward with a healthier Penticton,” Proteau said, presenting news articles on the prevalence of cancer in Canada.

The higher-frequency radio waves carry data much faster, but not very far, requiring a wide deployment — about every 8-12 homes — of micro-cell towers in areas to be serviced by 5G. The technology will likely be needed to make self-driving cars a reality and telecommunications firms maintain it is completely safe.

“Everyone here now is using wireless technology, and we are going at quite a fast pace, but I don’t believe anyone has stopped to consider if there is a health risk,” delegation member Vickie Lightfoot said, explaining she is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation herself. “I think we need to take a step back and allow us all to learn a little bit more about this.”

Mayor Andrew Jakubeit said the city has not been approached by any telecom providers about 5G networks. He noted Penticton was one of the first communities to offer an opt-out option for AMR smart meters.

Council eventually agreed to direct council to work with Proteau to engage the community about the health impacts of 5G. “I admit, I’m happy with Andrew and the council,” Proteau told Castanet after the meeting. “The key is, I’m not looking for an opt-out program here. This has to be banned.”

Scientists of 35 Countries Rap Proposed 5G Radiation Rollout in Europe

More than 180 scientists and medical doctors from 35 countries today pleaded for a halt to the proposed rollout of 5G celltowers in Europe.

In California, more than 300 of the 400 city and county governments are opposing SB 649, an industry-sponsored bill which overrides local control over the wireless industry’s access to utility poles and public buildings for 5G deployment.

“If this bill passes, many people will suffer greatly, and needlessly, as a direct result. This sounds like hyperbole. It is not.” according to Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine in the medical school at the University of California, San Diego. In her open letter which summarizes the research on the effects of radio frequency radiation, she concludes, ”Let our focus be on safer, wired and well shielded technology – not more wireless.”Environmental health advocates fear that exposure to the added radiation from 5G infrastructure will contribute to increased health problems.

Scientists Contact EC

The scientists and doctors sent a declaration today to officials of the European Commission based in Brussels. They demanded a moratorium on the increase of cell antennas for planned 5G expansion. Concerns over health effects from higher radiation exposure include potential neurological impacts, infertility, and cancer.

Roll-out of 5G in the US

In the U.S., the wireless industry is promoting legislation in at least 20 states to facilitate the roll-out of 5G in addition to sponsoring legislation at the federal level.

Here is part of the release datelined Sept. 13 in Orebro, Sweden.

“The wireless industry is trying to deploy technology that may have some very real unintended harmful consequences,” explains one of the organizers of the letter, Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden. “Scientific studies from years ago along with many new studies are consistently identifying harmful human health impacts when wireless products are tested properly using conditions that reflect actual exposures. With hazards at those exposures, we are very concerned that the added exposure to 5G radiation could result in tragic, irreversible harm.”

5G expansion, which is designed to carry higher loads of data more rapidly through wireless transmission, will require the construction of cell towers every 10-20 houses in urban areas.

In their letter to the European Commission, the scientists write:

“We, the undersigned, more than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 nations, recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry.”

University of California, Berkeley public health researcher Joel Moskowitz, PhD, explains:

“Peer-reviewed research has documented industry influence on studies of the health impacts of wireless radiation. We are insisting on a moratorium on 5G until non-industry research can be conducted to ensure the safety of the public.”

Dear Assembly Member Gonzalez:

On behalf of more than 3.3 million AARP members in California, I am writing in opposition of SB 649, which would harm California consumers. AARP believes that government should conduct the public’s business in an open, inclusionary, and equitable manner, and that administrative agencies should promote fairness, openness, and accountability in public decision-making. Unfortunately, SB 649 does just the opposite.

It is part of a nationwide effort to undermine the authority of local jurisdictions by allowing the installation of wireless or “small-cell” technology without requiring city or county discretionary permits. The wireless industry has convinced the Federal Communications Commission to launch a proceeding that preempts local authority if permits are not processed as quickly as the industry desires. This is clearly a usurpation of local authority and is contrary to the public’s interest in transparent, accountable government.

In addition, this bill aims to bypass the standard California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review, which identifies the environmental impact of physical developments. SB 649 also prevents local jurisdictions from rejecting small-cell towers on public property, with the only exception being fire departments.

This essentially negates a jurisdiction’s local zoning rights. Furthermore, this bill denies municipalities the right to charge a telecommunications company a fair market rate for the lease and rental of public property, which could potentially harm the economic welfare of the community through lost revenue and subsequent taxation in order to make up for that loss

Why This Resolution Matters
 
Despite a substantial body of evidence showing wireless technology is harmful to humans and the environment, Innovation Canada allows microcells to be placed on lampposts and utility poles by our homes without our consent or often knowledge.
 
Aesthetics, property value, liability, industry control-for-profit over the public right of way, cyber-security, public safety, health, and well-being – there are many reasons why local governments are concerned about microcells.

The Resolution That Was Passed:

MOTION of Grand Forks City Council
:
 
WHEREAS public consultation on the placement of cell towers is mandated; and
WHEREAS new technology is moving away from these large towers to microtransmitters which do not require local government or public consultation;
 
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED  that the AKBLG request the UBCM petition relevant provincial and federal governments to mandate consultation with the land use authorities and the public regarding microcell transmitter siting within 100 meters of residences, schools and hospitals.

What’s a Microcell?
 
Microcells are small cellular transmitters that broadcast wireless radiation 24 -7.  Anywhere from 3 to 10 of them are being placed on one residential street. Wireless radiation is linked to an increased risk of cancer, as well reproductive and neurological problems – like disturbed sleep. It is conservatively defined as a 2b carcinogen, which means it is in the same category as DDT.
 
Out of Sight, Out of Mind?
 
Industry is coming up with some sneaky ways of designing – or is that hiding – small cell transmitters. But that doesn’t mean their effects will not be felt.
 
The wireless industry would like us to believe the jury’s still out on whether wireless radiation has harmful health impacts. However, thousands of peer-reviewed studies show evidence of harm. Over 180 scientists and physicians just sent out a plea for a halt to the rollout of 5G transmitters in Europe. To protect their health, California firefighters won an exemption from having small cells placed on their fire halls. The question is, don’t the rest of us deserve this same protection? 
 
Safe Connectivity is an Option
 
Connectivity does not have to be primarily EMF-based and does not have to continue to escalate the amount of this scientifically deemed hazardous substance to which we are all exposed.

Citizens Up in Arms Against 5G Wireless Technology Roll-Out: Are Their Concerns Justified?

City council chambers and local officials in the US are facing the outcry of residents frightened by the next generation 5G wireless communications which by all accounts, will be taking over neighborhoods soon.

A resident in Montgomery County, Maryland raised her voice to ask local officials Why can’t we do a real health assessment here and find out what the real health risks are — to our children?” at a public meeting held at the county [9].

What are the risks? More to the point what is 5G?

What is 5G?

The 5th generation wireless systems (5G) are new network technologies designed to make your cell phone and similar wireless devices become super-duper powerful and fast.

Scheduled to be deployed from 2018 and made commercially available in 2020 [2] we are told 5G is expected to support at least 100 billion devices and up to 100 times faster than current 4G technology. (4G is already about 10 times faster than 3G).

The 5G tech will employ low-(0.6 GHz – 3.7 GHz), mid-(3.7 – 24 GHz), and high-band frequencies (24 GHz and higher). The “high-band” frequencies largely consist of millimeter waves (MMWs), a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths within 1- 10 millimeters and frequencies ranging from 30 to 300 GHz.

Health Hazards from Cell Phone Technology “Beyond Measure”

Cell phones operate essentially by sending and receiving radiofrequency radiation from their antennas to a nearby cell tower.

Thousands of independent studies link Radiofrequency radiation exposures from cell phones to a number of very serious diseases such as; Cancer [3], Infertility [4], Cardiovascular Diseases [5], Birth defects [6], Memory Problems [7], Sleep Disorders [7] and so on.

5G Technology Comes With Increased RF Radiation Exposure

These millimeter waves (MMWs) as used by the 5G network can transmit large amounts of data within a short period of time. But over short distances and also, the other big issue is that the signal is poorly transmitted through solid materials.

This means massive transmission of MMW will be needed.

Many new antennas will be needed. We are told full-scale implementation may require at least one antenna for every 10 to 12 houses in urban areas.

Also, the MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology is expected to be used massively. The MIMO technology is a wireless system that uses multiple transmitters hence, it is able to send and receive multiple/more data at once. Some 4G base stations already use MIMO technology. Standard MIMO involves four to eight antennae. MIMO for 5G may involve approximately 100 antennas per cell tower – that’s a lot of antennas!

Increased transmission leads to increased capacity, so electromagnetic radiation levels can only increase. The concern is that, given what we know about radio frequency radiation, this mandatory environmental increase in exposure to EM radiation will lead to increased health risks.

A number of studies have demonstrated the detrimental health effects of the MMW frequencies used in 5G technology.

Damaging Effects on the Human Skin

One Israeli study [8] lead by Dr. Yuri D Feldman found that human sweat ducts act as an array of tiny, helix-shaped antennas when exposed to MMWs. Their findings suggest that human skin not only absorbs but also amplifies the radiation from MMW networks.

A study carried [9]out to evaluate the interactions and implications of MMWs (60GHz) with the human body discovered that “more than 90% of the transmitted (MMWs) power is absorbed in the epidermis and dermis layer.”

The effect of MMWs on the skin is arguably the greatest concern of these new wavelengths utilized by 5G technology.

We might well be looking at the possibility of increased incidences of many skin diseases and cancer in the coming years in areas where the 5G technology is deployed.

Profound Effect On Immune System

A 2002 Russian study [10]  carried out to examine the effects of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation (42HGz) exposure on the blood of healthy mice found that, the activity of cells involved in immunity such as the neutrophils reduced drastically (about 50% decrease in activity).

It was concluded that “the whole-body exposure of healthy mice to low-intensity EHF EMR has a profound effect on the indices of nonspecific immunity.”

Damaging Effects on The Heart

A 1992 study [11]found that frequencies in the range 53-78GHz impacted the heart rate variability (an indicator of stress) in rats. A Russian study [12]on frogs whose skin was exposed to MMWs discovered abnormal heart rate changes (arrhythmias).

Hazardous Effects on the Eyes

In 1994, a study [12]carried out in Poland to evaluate the influence of millimeter radiation on light transmission through the lens of the eyes. It was discovered that low-level MMW radiation produced lens opacity in rats, which is associated the production of cataracts.

A Japanese experiment [13]carried out to examine the potential for 60-GHz millimeter-wave exposure to cause acute ocular injuries found that 60GHz “…millimeter-wave antennas can cause thermal injuries of varying types of levels. The thermal effects induced by millimeter waves can apparently penetrate below the surface of the eye.”

180 Scientist and Doctors Call For A Moratorium

Scientists are concerned as well. More than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 countries [14], have recommended a temporary ban on the roll-out of 5G technology until its potential hazards on human health and the environment have been fully evaluated by scientists independent of the telecommunication industry.

What Are The Real Dangers Of 5G Technology?

The short answer is: we don’t fully know yet!  But the studies we have on this are a cause for concern.

The health hazard of the most studied 3G CMDA technology (shown to cause an array of detrimental health effects) have not been fully revealed, yet, here we are, at the verge of adopting a potentially more dangerous technology.

Don’t you think we should fully evaluate the health effects of 5G before rolling out the technology?

Let’s not forget, alternatives to wireless mobile technology are available. Fiber Optic Broadband Technology is a feasible and safer alternative.  I firmly believe that technological improvement can be attained without jeopardizing the health of the general public.
